As the churning commenced, numerous celestial treasures emerged from the depths, including poison.
Fearing the catastrophic consequences of the poison’s release, the devas and asuras pleaded for help. In response to their prayers, Lord Shiva, out of his boundless compassion, consumed the lethal poison. To prevent it from spreading through his body, his consort, Goddess Parvati, pressed her hand against his throat, hence turning his neck blue and earning him the name “Neelakantha,” meaning the one with a blue throat.
